The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) is currently participating in proceedings at the Limpopo Workers Parliament today. Key representatives from organised labour and the provincial government are coming together to discuss issues of unemployment, job growth and labour legislation.

“FEDUSA calls on other provinces to follow suit and create a space for an open and honest consultation process between organised labour and the national and provincial government,” said FEDUSA General Secretary, Dennis George, “poverty, unemployment and jobless growth can only be effectively addressed when all stakeholders are committed to a solution.”

Between last year’s third and final quarter employment statistics, Statistics South Africa recorded Limpopo province as the province that experienced the biggest job gains, with 57 000 additional people being employed. This increase stands in stark contrast to the provinces of Mpumalanga and Gauteng, which lost 14 000 and 5 000 jobs respectively.

Statistics South Africa recorded a general decrease in the unemployment rate in six of the nine provinces by the end of 2010; however Limpopo again came out tops with the biggest provincial decrease in the unemployment rate at 8.2 percentage points. “We are here today to strategically learn from the Limpopo province’s success as well as forge ahead to ultimately ensure decent work for a better life,” concluded George.

The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) has returned from the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) International Forum on Economic Globalisation and Trade Unions in Beijing, China, this week. Mr Koos Bezuidenhout, UASA CEO and FEDUSA Deputy President, represented the federation and affiliated union during proceedings.

“South African trade unions are constantly exploring ways and means to enhance the promotion of transformation of the economic growth mode, improving the skills of workers, building a sound social security system and achieving decent work for all workers. The road to economic recovery will prove to be long, winding and rocky,” commented Bezuidenhout. “FEDUSA’s participation in forums of this nature enable us as an organisation to think globally and act locally,” said FEDUSA General Secretary Dennis George.

The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) joins together with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) in acknowledgement of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. This day signals the beginning of a global strategy involving business, government and organised labour to foster a culture of preventative health and safety measures. Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems (OSHMS) must be used as tools for continual improvement in the prevention of incidents and accidents in the workplace.

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work signals the need to prevent occupational accidents and diseases globally by implementing legislation, following procedural checks and balances and proactively watching emerging trends in the field of occupational health and safety. “While looking to improve the health and safety of our workers going into the future, this day is also an opportunity to honour workers around the world who died or were injured as a result of occupational accidents and diseases in the workplace,” said FEDUSA General Secretary, Dennis George.
