The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) is currently participating in proceedings at the Limpopo Workers Parliament today. Key representatives from organised labour and the provincial government are coming together to discuss issues of unemployment, job growth and labour legislation.
“FEDUSA calls on other provinces to follow suit and create a space for an open and honest consultation process between organised labour and the national and provincial government,” said FEDUSA General Secretary, Dennis George, “poverty, unemployment and jobless growth can only be effectively addressed when all stakeholders are committed to a solution.”
Between last year’s third and final quarter employment statistics, Statistics South Africa recorded Limpopo province as the province that experienced the biggest job gains, with 57 000 additional people being employed. This increase stands in stark contrast to the provinces of Mpumalanga and Gauteng, which lost 14 000 and 5 000 jobs respectively.
Statistics South Africa recorded a general decrease in the unemployment rate in six of the nine provinces by the end of 2010; however Limpopo again came out tops with the biggest provincial decrease in the unemployment rate at 8.2 percentage points. “We are here today to strategically learn from the Limpopo province’s success as well as forge ahead to ultimately ensure decent work for a better life,” concluded George.
