The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) Management Committee decided today to join the COSATU Section 77 Notice on Gauteng Open Road Tolling System.

“The open road tolling system (ORTS) is aimed at consolidating the privatisation of our national roads and this simply cannot be allowed to happen. Not only will these additional costs be transferred directly to our members and South African citizens, but FEDUSA is deeply concerned that proper consultation regarding the ORTS as well as the proposed toll fees has not yet taken place,” said FEDUSA General Secretary, Dennis George.

FEDUSA strongly believes that representatives from Government, Business and Organised Labour must be consulted around the ORTS proposal within the NEDLAC structure. “Government cannot forgo their responsibility of maintaining the country’s infrastructure and then unilaterally decide to pass on these costs to taxpayers, consultation with the social partners must be made a priority,” commented George.

The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) is very concerned at the failure of parties in the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC) to conclude the 2011/12 salary negotiations.

“Organised Labour tabled their demands in February this year, however Government only responded to demands at the end of March. Even with the assistance of an outside facilitator negotiations have been slow and unproductive,” explained FEDUSA Deputy General Secretary, Gretchen Humphries.

There is an urgent need to finalise negotiations as the general salary adjustment was supposed to have been implemented with effect from 1 May 2011, and the new improved housing benefit with effect from 1 April 2011.

The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) today signed the National Skills and Basic Education Accords at the Union Buildings. The signing was followed by a discussion around draft Accords on Procurement and Enterprise Development.

“The major concern that FEDUSA noted from today’s meeting is the lack of and decreasing amount of money being allocated for infrastructure maintenance and development. We have on numerous occasions called for a return to rail. While Government committed to revive rail transport and port facilities, their promises that infrastructure development will create investment and new jobs cannot be taken seriously unless government spending is radically increased and development prioritised,” stated Dennis George, FEDUSA General Secretary.
