The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) proudly rallies behind South Africa’s national women’s football team, Banyana Banyana, as they compete in the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2026) in Morocco.
FEDUSA calls on all South Africans to unite in support of Banyana Banyana by wearing the national football jersey and showing the same passion and pride that was demonstrated for Bafana Bafana. Our women’s team deserves equal recognition, encouragement, and celebration.
We must support our national women’s team not only when they represent us on the international stage, but also throughout their journeys at home.
FEDUSA also takes this opportunity to highlight ongoing concerns affecting women in sport. In 2024, the Commission for Gender Equality released a report titled Gender Inequality in Sport: Insights into the Women’s National Soccer Team – Banyana Banyana. The report underscores the challenges faced by women in football and sport in general.
These challenges include mental health pressures linked to performance expectations, limited support structures, and body image concerns. Women remain underrepresented in leadership and decision-making positions, which continue to be dominated by men.
The report further raises serious concerns about gender-based violence, including harassment and abuse, which often go unreported due to fear, stigma, and weak reporting mechanisms. Institutional support remains inadequate, leaving many women without the necessary protection and resources.
In addition, inequalities in funding and pay persist. Women athletes receive less sponsorship, reduced media visibility, and often face unclear or inequitable financial arrangements. These issues are made worse by insufficient resources and infrastructure, including inadequate training facilities and equipment.
FEDUSA emphasises that addressing these inequalities requires collective action. Supporting Banyana Banyana is not only about national pride but it is a step towards advancing gender equality in sport. Let us stand together as a nation and give Banyana Banyana the unwavering
support they deserve.
