The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) rallies behind its affiliate, UASA, as its members in the sugar industry embark on a protected strike over wage negotiations and improved benefits.
The workers’ demands include wage increases and improved benefits that adequately reflect the economic realities facing workers. Rising costs of food, fuel, electricity, transport and housing continue to place significant pressure on household incomes, making meaningful wage adjustments essential for workers and their families.
FEDUSA urges the employer to engage meaningfully with UASA and listen to the workers’ demands to avoid a prolonged strike. Good-faith negotiations with unions not only support employees but also contribute to constructive labour relations and strengthen the organization.
Therefore, FEDUSA amplifies UASA’s call for all members participating in the protected strike to continue conducting themselves peacefully, responsibly and in full compliance with the law. FEDUSA will continue to engage with UASA on developments regarding the negotiations and the strike.
