The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) mourns the tragic loss of three mineworkers at operations in Rustenburg, including two workers at Impala Platinum Mine and one worker at Valterra Platinum’s Tumela Mine.
FEDUSA, together with its affiliate UASA, acknowledges and supports the actions taken by both mining companies in response to these incidents. Impala Platinum’s decision to suspend production in the affected areas to conduct a comprehensive safety review, and Valterra Platinum’s decision to withdraw workers from underground operations and halt activities in the affected section, demonstrate a responsible approach to protecting the well-being of their workers.
FEDUSA demands enhanced safety measures to protect workers from further harm. No worker should go to work and lose their life in the line of duty. Such losses are deeply painful and have a lasting impact on the families, friends, and colleagues of those who lost their lives. We trust that affected workers will be provided with counselling and the necessary support to assist them in recovering from this traumatic experience.
According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), nearly 3 million workers lose their lives each year due to work-related causes, including occupational accidents and diseases. In high-risk sectors such as mining and construction, prioritising Occupational Health and Safety (ILO) is not only a legal obligation but also a fundamental principle, ensuring that every worker returns home safely and that workplaces uphold the fundamental right to a safe and healthy working environment.
FEDUSA extends its heartfelt condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of the three miners.
