The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) welcomes the withdrawal of the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) Board Chairpersons appointments and effectively opening up the process again.
FEDUSA affiliate, National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) had written a letter to the minister of Higher Education and Training Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, expressing grave concerns at the process and seemingly lack of transparency in the appointment of SETA Board Chairpersons.
FEDUSA’s support for NTEU’s position highlights the need for transparency and accountability in these institutions, so that SETAs can play their part in developing skills in South Africa. Ensuring an open and credible appointment process will not only restore public trust but highlights the demand for transparency and accountability, not just in these institutions, but as a fundamental value that South Africa must insist on without fear or favour.
FEDUSA will not stand by and watch as workers are placed on the sacrificial alter, when prioritization of sector skills are relegated in favour of political posturing and false promises of skills acquisition, transfer and ultimately worker traction and absorption into the labour market
Whilst the Minister’s intervention is welcomed, FEDUSA insists that instead of being in a climate of constant damage control and picking up the pieces of falling confidence, a culture of transparency and accountability must be upheld as a non-negotiable pathway for ejecting workers into a constant skills revolution to respond to the future of jobs.
END.
