FEDUSA SENDS CONDOLENCES AFTER THE TRAGIC KILLING OF MTWU MEMBER IN CIT ROBBERY

FEDUSA SENDS CONDOLENCES AFTER THE TRAGIC KILLING OF MTWU MEMBER IN CIT

22 AUGUST 2025

The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) is deeply saddened and outraged by the brutal killing of a Motor Transport Workers Union (MTWU) member, who was ambushed along with a colleague who had since been hospitalized, during a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery earlier this week.

It is reported that the 44-year-old guard and his colleague were brutally attacked by four armed men while on duty at Kauser Cash & Carry in East London.

FEDUSA extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues and loved ones of the slain guard and wishes the injured guard a full and speedy recovery. We hope that counselling and support will be provided to all those affected by this senseless attack.

It is deeply concerning that, despite repeated calls for stronger protection of CIT guards, these senseless and deadly attacks continue. We cannot allow more lives to be lost in such a cruel and preventable manner.

Therefore, we call on employers, unions, and the police to work together in strengthening the safety and protection of CIT guards.

FEDUSA calls on the police to act swiftly in apprehending the perpetrators and ensuring that justice is served without delay. FEDUSA demands urgent intervention by the National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola to strengthen the protection of CIT guards, and together with MTWU we are ready for further discussions on measures on how to protect workers against harm.

END.
