FEDUSA WELCOMES TRIBUNAL RULING IN FAVOUR OF SIU ON PPE CONTRACT

FEDUSA WELCOMES TRIBUNAL RULING IN FAVOUR OF SIU ON PPE CONTRACT

21 October 2025

The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) welcomes the judgment by the Special Tribunal in favour of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), which has resulted in the recovery of R2,427,333.30 of public funds from an unlawful Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) contract. This contract was awarded during the COVID-19 pandemic to Nozihle Construction and Projects CC by the Mpumalanga Department of Health for the supply of 100,000 surgical masks.

The company was not licensed as a distributor by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) as required by law.

FEDUSA commends the SIU for its efforts in holding those responsible accountable and for recovering public funds that rightfully belong to the people of South Africa. This case highlights the importance of adhering to lawful procurement practices at all times and sends a clear message that the theft of public funds will not be tolerated.

FEDUSA will continue to support the efforts of the SIU, the judiciary, and oversight institutions in the ongoing fight to promote good governance and restore public confidence in our government institutions.

We reiterate that corruption within government structures robs South Africans of capable, transparent, and functioning public services.

END.
