The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) is horrified by the deadly shooting that occurred at
Ntabankulu Primary School in Ntabankulu, Eastern Cape. The incident took place in full view of learners, during which two teachers were tragically killed and another teacher was injured.
FEDUSA extends its deepest condolences to the families of the slain teachers. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends, colleagues, and learners affected by this senseless act of violence.
This tragic incident once again highlights the need to strengthen safety and security measures in schools to protect teachers, staff, and learners. FEDUSA has previously raised serious concerns about the lack of safety and security in schools and reiterates that schools must be places of safety. Urgent and tightened security measures are needed to prevent such unfortunate incidents. FEDUSA recommends the insourcing of security personnel to ensure improved safety and security in schools.
It is deeply disheartening that learners and colleagues who witnessed the shooting have been left traumatized. FEDUSA demands that urgent resources be made available to provide psychological support and counselling services to all affected learners and staff.
Therefore, FEDUSA calls on the government to deploy additional resources to enhance safety and security in schools across the country.
END.
