FEDUSA WELCOMES CHERY ACQUISITION OVER NISSAN PLANT IN PRETORIA

FEDUSA WELCOMES CHERY ACQUISITION OVER NISSAN PLANT IN PRETORIA

27 January 2026

The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) supports its affiliate, the Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA), in welcoming Chery’s investment in South Africa through the acquisition of Nissan’s historic production plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria. This investment will provide employment to the majority of Nissan’s affected employees.

The automotive industry contributes significantly to South Africa’s GDP, boosts exports, and attracts foreign investment. Chery’s investment will create job opportunities both directly and indirectly, which will greatly assist in addressing South Africa’s unemployment crisis.

FEDUSA echoes MISA’s sentiments that such investments are critical in absorbing workers affected by the closure of non-performing dealerships of traditional brands and in ensuring employment sustainability within the retail motor sector.

We commend Nissan for its bold decision to protect its workers while exploring alternative business opportunities that will benefit the country, despite facing the closure of its plant.

We trust that the partnership between Nissan and Chery will encourage further investment from other automotive manufacturers into the country.
