4 February 2026
The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) notes the publication of the amendment to Schedule 1 of the National Minimum Wage Act, which increases the national minimum wage to R30,23 per hour, effective from 1 March 2026.
However, FEDUSA is concerned about the lower minimum wage for workers employed under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), which is set at R16,62 per hour.
FEDUSA strongly believes that EPWP workers are underpaid, especially at a time when the cost of living in South Africa is very high. These wages are not enough to cover basic needs and do not allow workers to live with dignity or have financial security and freedom.
FEDUSA remains committed to working with government, business, and social partners to promote fair wages, reduce inequality, and support inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
END.
