The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) stands in full support of its affiliate, UASA, in expressing deep sadness and concern following the announcement by Ekapa Resources (Pty) Ltd and Ekapa Minerals (Pty) Ltd of their intention to apply for liquidation.
This development comes at a traumatic time, as the company continues to deal with the aftermath of the Du Toitspan Joint Shaft mudslide, where five workers remain missing and are now presumed deceased.
Announcing an intention to liquidate while workers are still unaccounted for is deeply troubling and insensitive. While we recognise the serious financial challenges facing the mine, the immediate priority must be the recovery of the trapped workers and meaningful support for their families.
FEDUSA trusts that this tragedy will not result in an outcome similar to that at Lily Mine, where the remains of workers who tragically lost their lives 10 years ago have yet to be recovered. The proposed liquidation will make an already difficult situation even more dire. Beyond the immediate loss of jobs, five families now face the painful reality of losing both their income and their loved ones.
FEDUSA will work closely with its affiliate, UASA, which organises in the mining industry, to monitor developments related to the liquidation process and the rescue mission for the five trapped workers.
END.
