The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) notes the release of the fourth quarter crime statistics for the 2025/26 financial year by Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia. While we recognise that some types of crime have decreased, overall crime in South Africa is still very high and remains a national crisis.
It is worrying that crime continues to affect all communities across the country. Many communities continue to live in fear due to violent crime, including murder, assault, and gender-based violence. We support the Minister’s view that the root causes of these crimes must be addressed. FEDUSA welcomes the Police Reset Agenda, which aims to enhance the professionalism and ethical conduct of police personnel, overhaul procurement and supply chain systems, and strengthen intelligence gathering and investigative capacity. We also support the modernisation of police stations as a critical step towards improving service delivery and building public trust.
In provinces that have been identified as high crime areas, we recommend that law enforcement strengthen its presence and that more resources are allocated to fight crime. We strongly believe that South Africa cannot accept high levels of crime as normal. Crime affects everyone, harms the economy, and weakens communities. It is important that the society work together to fight crime.
FEDUSA emphasises that safer communities are important for economic growth, job creation, and long-term stability. We encourage the public to work together with the police to fight crime and create a safer South Africa.
END.
