7 October 2025
On this World Day for Decent Work, the Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) reiterates its call for decent work for all, as a cornerstone of social justice, inclusive economic growth, and development.
FEDUSA stands firmly behind the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) definition of decent work and supports the development of a strong and enforceable regulatory framework to ensure these principles are carried out both in the public and private sectors.
Decent work is an important human right as it represents the path towards equality, dignity, and empowerment for millions of workers across South Africa and the world. It consists of access to employment, fair wages, workplace health and safety, social protection, respect for labour rights, opportunities for personal development, and equal treatment for all regardless of gender, age, race, or background.
Despite strides made towards decent work it is upsetting that many workers still continue to face unstable employment, low wages, unsafe conditions, and lack of basic benefits. The informal sector, youth unemployment, gender based discrimination, and wage inequality continue to undermine progress on decent work for all.
As we look towards the future of work, automation, digitalisation, and green economic transitions we call for a just transition that is inclusive for all and must not leave anyone behind. FEDUSA will continue to engage in social dialogues with government, business, and labour to advance the decent work agenda.
Together, we must build a more just, equitable, and inclusive future of work where no one is left behind.
END.
